What is Pineapple Skin Tea?

Pineapple skin tea is a herbal infusion made by boiling the outer skin of a pineapple. The peel contains antioxidants, vitamins and most importantly digestive enzymes like bromelain.

Many cultures have used pineapple skin tea for its benefits. In fact, if you want to turn this drink into a probiotic. I suggest adapting this recipe and making a tepache, which is a traditional fermented recipe instead.

1. Rich in Antioxidants

The antioxidants in the peel contain compounds that fight against oxidative stress, which supports your overall health.

2. Helps With Digestion

The bromelain in pineapple is known to aid digestion, thereby improving your bowel movements and reducing bloating.

Because of it’s vitamin C content, consuming this tea often will naturally contribute to a stronger immune system.

4. Reduces Inflammation in the Body

You know your body is inflamed when you constantly have to deal with a puffy face, skin issues and body aches. You don’t have to worry about all that with this pineapple skin juice.

5. Supports Weight Loss

If you are looking for a natural tea to help support your body goals and you definitely do not want to go down the route of Flat Tummy Tea and the likes (for obvious health reasons) then drinking pineapple skin tea for weight loss is worth considering.

Tepache (Fermented Pineapple Mexican Drink)

Instructions

  1. After washing the pineapple thoroughly with lemon and salt to remove dirt or residue.
  2. Place the peels and core into a large jar or bowl, add water (make sure the pineapple is fully submerged to prevent moulding), sugar, and spices, then stir.
  3. Cover loosely with a cheesecloth and leave at room temperature (75-85°F) for 1–3 days.
  4. You’ll start to see bubbles and a slightly tangy pleasant smell, this means it’s working.
  5. Once it reaches a sweet-tangy balance you like, strain out the solids.
  6. Pour into bottles, seal, and leave out for another 1–2 days to build carbonation.
  7. Refrigerate and serve cold for the best flavor.

Things to note:

Warmer temperatures
speed up the fermentation (24–36 hours), while cooler temperatures take longer.

If a white, powdery yeast (Kahm yeast) forms on top, it is safe to remove, but discard if fuzzy mold appears.

If you see fuzzy, colored (white, green, black) mold on your tepache, you should discard the entire batch. Watch this video to know the difference between mould and yeast before discarding.

If the brew doesn’t ferment then it’s likely that the room is too cold, there’s not enough sugar, you’ve been stirring too much or the pineapple skin has pesticides.

If you are into sustainable living and hate food waste like me while wanting the added health benefits, then this delicious recipe should be your go to. Let me know when you try it!
