How To Dress More Feminine

Did you know that when you meet someone for the first time you have only 30 seconds to make a lasting impression?

My desire to dress more feminine came naturally as I began to heal my feminine energy. I have summarised the most crucials points on how to dress more feminine, this is for the girlies who want to start over and build a brand new wardrobe.

how to dress more feminine

1. Learn To Make Colours Work For You

You may be wondering what colour theory has to do with how to dress more feminine, but in fact it has a lot to do with looking effortlessly put together.

No more wondering why you have a wardrobe of clothes and drawer of makeup you don’t wear without knowing exactly why.

Quick colour test – In front of a mirror in a natural light situation (you want to do this with no makeup on), hold the colour under your chin.

You know a colour is right for you if;

  • Your face appears lit from underneath AND there are no harsh shadows around your chin and neck.
  • This colour makes you look younger and healthier, you notice your best features AND it doesn’t highlight your wrinkles and uneven complexion.
  • You notice YOU more than the color NOT the other way around.

You can wear any colour in fact, whites, red, blue, green, orange you just need to choose it in the right shade and tone.

You can find more about colour theory here.

Style tip: The hardware on your jewellery should match the metal hardware on your shoes, clothes and bags. For example, if you’re wearing a gold watch, try to match the hardware on all your accessories to gold for a cohesive look.

2. It’s In The Little Details

Underwear

Underwear needs to be functional and not tacky. Your underwear should never be seen under your clothes. Think of your underwear as a foundation of your final outfit. Depending on the style of clothing, you may want to opt for shapewear, plunge bra, strapless bra, the wear everywhere bra (in nude and preferably seamless).

Jewellery

Jewellery adds a feminine touch to your outfits. Keep it simple and dainty but it really depends on what your style personality is.

Nails

Choose nails that you can maintain. Nude, pinks and french tips go with everything and it’s very low maintenance.

Fabric

Think texture, think soft, think expensive. Fabrics that appear more luxurious and feminine are natural fibres like silk, lace etc. Shinier fabrics like leather make you appear larger and emphasize curves because they deflect light.

Fit

Tailor your clothing to fit your body. Tailor your essential pieces.

Style tip: To avoid makeup stains on clothing, cover your face with a cotton square, covering your neck area.

3. Find Your Style Personality

Ditch the idea that dresses and skirts are the only way to dress feminine. Maybe you want to know how to dress more feminine but not girly, that just means your style personality is not romantic and you may be leaning towards the classic, city chic or natural style.

Bear in mind that your style could be a combination of two of these style personas.

Creative

Your wardrobe is mostly thrifted mixed with some high-end vintage designer pieces you have collected over the years.

Clothing is another form of self expression and art form for you.

You are heavily inspired by fashion trends, you are basically a trend setter.

Dramatic

Your clothes don’t have to be practical they just have to make a statement

You have bought different styles of clothing that don’t really go together.

You love to be the center of attention.

Romantic

You are what they call a girly girl – you spend the longest time on your grooming and self care.

You adore the little feminine details – bows, ruffles, flowers, lace, you name it!

Your sports clothes are usually in pretty colours or have feminine details on them.

Classic

You do not follow fashion trends, your approach to fashion is one of prioritising longevity and quality.

Your style is timeless and elegant.

You usually opt for a colour co-ordinated look and tend to stay away from bold colour combinations.

Natural

You are very laid back when it comes to fashion, hair and makeup.

Your jewellery, if worn at all, is very minimal.

You prefer to have comfort over anything, so high heels are usually not in the question.

Style Tip: Now that you know your style personality, create pinterest boards for outfit inspos, hair and makeup based on your style persona. This will inform your choices when you go shopping.

4. Consider Your Body Type & Proportions

Women are designed to have curves. You may look in the mirror and want to change something about your body, but why not embrace your curves by making your body type work for you by simply choosing clothes that accentuate your best features.

Recognizing your body type—whether it’s hourglass, pear-shaped, triangle, rectangular, or apple—helps in selecting clothes that enhance your feminine silhouette.

The feminine key areas to enhance your femininity are – shoulders, bust, waist, hips, legs, neck, back and arms.

Proportions play a crucial role in creating a balanced look; for instance, pairing a voluminous top with a fitted bottom can create harmony on a pear shape, but will look absurd on a triangle shape. But ofcourse, feel free to break the rules!

Scale is equally important point on how to dress more feminine for your body type. As a petite woman, the size of patterns and accessories I buy must complement my body’s frame; smaller prints suit petite figures, while larger prints can flatter more voluptuous curves.

Style tip: Consider your face shape when deciding on your makeup application, hairstyle and accessories like eyeglasses and earrings. By thoughtfully considering these elements, you can create outfits that not only fit well but also highlight your best features, ensuring a polished appearance.

5. Improve Your Shopping Habits

What makes your wardrobe less functional?

Having too many loud hyperpieces and hypersilhouettes.

Hidden hyperpiece – a piece of clothing that has an exciting element to it. The key is to find a hidden hyperpiece that you don’t mind wearing again and again.

Loud hyperpiece – a piece of clothing that is bold and extravagant, whether in prints or embellishment. It becomes hard to pair with other things. Buy less of the loud hyperpiece.

Hypersilhouette – think paperbag pants, belt bags and extreme slits. Combine a hypersilhouette with a wear everyday colour.

Buy according to NEED or NOVELTY but it needs to pair well with at least 3 items that you already own.

The new buying process

Before you buy anything new ask yourself these questions.

  • Does this match my lifestyle?
  • What is the cost per wear on this item?
  • Do I have clothes that already go with this or am I planning on purchasing more items for it to work?
  • Will this item be relevant and in good quality 5 years from now or is this just a trend?
  • Do I really love this or am I hoping I will grow into it?
  • Can I make 3 outfits from this single piece?

Style tip: Monochromatic looks look more expensive and put together
