Recently, we talked about back to school nails, and now we are moving on to the major element to bring our fashion looks to life: hairstyles.
We all know that hair is one of the most important factors when it comes to style. In fact, the right or wrong hairstyle can make or break an outfit, which is why it deserves just as much attention as the clothing pieces themselves.
Imagine having a bomb outfit and beautiful nails, only for your hair to completely miss the mark. The entire look can fall flat. We have even seen celebrities at fashion events step out in incredible outfits, yet something still feels off simply because their hairstyle doesn’t complement the look.
When it comes to cute hairstyles for school, we want something stylish, pretty, neat, and, of course, school-friendly. But as simple as that sounds, finding the perfect hairstyle isn’t always easy. We don’t want anything that might be inappropriate for the school environment or get us in trouble, but we also don’t want to look bland or boring.
That’s why I created this post for the girlies getting ready to resume a new school session and looking to feel pretty, confident, and put together after a long vacation.
These cute hairstyles for school are gorgeous, chic, and polished. Also, not all of them require an appointment with a hairstylist. Many can easily be recreated from the comfort of your home and still look stunning
Let’s get right into it.
1. Textured Bun With Tendrils

You can never go wrong with a textured bun. It is easy to recreate yet looks polished and pretty; I like to call it the pretty-girl hairstyle.
On its own, it already looks gorgeous, but if you want to elevate it even further, add a few tendrils on both sides of your face to frame it beautifully and give the hairstyle a cute, girly finish.
2. Twisted Half-Up Half-Down Ponytail

I love me a hairstyle that looks simple and complicated at the same time. It just feels like peak creativity to me, and I’m going to show you how to achieve this look. You can also do it with a body wave wig.
First off, wash your hair. You want clean, dry hair to achieve this beauty right here because greasy or dirty hair may not give you the best results. After washing and drying your hair, start by curling or loosely waving it to give the ends some movement and volume.
Next, take a section of hair from one side of your head and twist it backward toward the center. Repeat on the other side, then bring both twists together at the back and secure them with a small elastic. Gently loosen the twists to add a little volume. You can even go ahead and pull out a few face-framing pieces at the front for a softer finish.
This hairstyle can be done on straight, wavy, or curly hair.
3. Braided Half-Up High Puff

Credit: teerachelle_
You see, as girls with curly or coily hair, finding back to school hairstyles that are both easy and cute isn’t always so easy. Many of the looks out there are designed for straight hair, which leaves us with the option of either straightening our hair and risking damage to our curl patterns or slapping on a wig, which, by the way, there is absolutely nothing wrong with.
However, if you are in your natural girl era, you can easily recreate this style. Start by parting the front section of your hair toward the crown into several sections. The parts don’t have to be perfectly straight, so don’t stress if they aren’t. Braid each section backward toward the crown, keeping the braids neat and close to the scalp.
Pull the unbraided hair up toward the crown and secure it with a strong hair tie. Gently separate and fluff your curls to create that big, full puff.
Since this is a half-up, half-down style, leave the lower section of your curls loose and defined. You can use a little leave-in conditioner or curl-defining product to enhance your curls and give them more definition.
For that extra finishing touch, lay your edges with some edge-control gel, and you are good to go.
4. Braided Pigtails

Credit: teerachelle_
I was never a huge fan of pigtails until now, but I’m obsessed with the dangling curls and twists, plus the pearl and ribbon accessories. They add such a pretty, feminine touch that makes the look pop more.
I can imagine pairing this with a cute floral dress or denim pants with a tank top and fitted cardigan, finished with ballet flats and a pretty handbag. Add some pearl jewelry, and the whole look is all girly-girl vibes, and I’m absolutely here for it.
5. Two Space Buns

Credit: shanformd
Why have one bun when you can have two? I think what makes this style so unique is the ends sticking out like little spikes. It gives the hairstyle a playful, fashionable edge. And, of course, the delicate tendrils add a softer, more feminine touch to the look.
We can’t deny that most cute hairstyles for school tend to lack personality or creativity because we are trying to keep things school-friendly. But this look proves that your hairstyle can still be striking, have a little edge, and look refined at the same time.
So, if you are someone who loves to express yourself through fashion, this look is definitely for you.
6. Slick Back With Baby Hairs

Credit: slickedbykyla
You know there is no way a cute and easy hairstyles for school list would exist without a slick-back hairstyle. This style has been around for decades and is loved by so many women, not just students.
It’s easy to do and never fails to look incredibly gorgeous.
At the same time, though, it is also surprisingly easy to mess up, leaving you with that puffed up look and, even worse, white gel residue all over your hair.
My few tips for achieving the perfect slick-back start with sectioning your hair. This makes your hair much easier to work with and allows you to properly brush everything down for a smoother finish.
Another tip is to blow-dry or straighten your hair beforehand. It doesn’t have to be bone-straight, but stretching your hair will make it much easier to get that sleek, flat hair.
My sister, who is a hairstylist, taught me to start with a gummy wax and a hard-bristle brush. Apply the wax and brush your hair downward until it lies flat, almost like a sheet of paper. Then, go in with some gel and a hair tie to secure everything and give it that super-sleek finish.
My favorite is the Got2b gel, but you can use whatever gel you have on hand. Just make sure it doesn’t leave a white residue once it dries.
Finish off with some edge control to lay your edges. You can keep them natural or make them as dramatic as you want. It’s your hair, so have fun and play around with it.
7. Side Cornrow With Sew In

If I rock this type of look, a mirror will hate to see me coming, Instead of getting a regular sew-in, why not switch things up and add some side cornrows?
If you are into the Y2K aesthetic, then you are going to love this one. And with Y2K fashion making such a huge comeback, from capri outfits to cargo pants outfits and everything in between, this is the perfect time to recreate this hairstyle. This hairdo is so beautiful, especially when you recreate it with good-quality hair bundles.
You can get them from my favorite online hair store, ISEE HAIR. Their hair always gets me compliments and is long-lasting. I have some wigs and bundles that I have been using for more than two years now, and trust me, they still look good as new.
8. Half Up Half Down

Credit: gemmatemple_beauty
This is one of my favorite, favorite, hairstyles from back in school. I wore it so much that I eventually wore it to prom, and guess what? I won Best Dressed.
This is one of those cute back to school hairstyles that never fails to look gorgeous. It suits everyone, regardless of your face shape. It’s a hairstyle for everyone.
Also, this hairstyle is super easy to do. I remember back when I was in high school, it never took me more than 15 minutes to get the perfect half-up, half-down look. I could literally do it with my eyes closed.
9. Short Half Up Half Down

Credit: eventsmakeupspace
One misconception a lot of people have is that half-up, half-down hairstyles are only suitable for long or medium-length hair. I used to believe this too, until my best friend, who had recently cut her long hair short, showed up to our school party wearing a half-up, half-down style, and it was absolutely beautiful.
She had added some curls to her hair, and guys, it was breathtaking. She got so many compliments that night, and I was the first to compliment her. She looked stunning; it was such a beautiful look.
Since then, I have seen so many girls with short hair rocking half-up, half-down hairstyles, and the one thing I have noticed is that curls and pretty accessories really make these styles stand out. Think floral clips, bows, ribbons, pearls, or other cute hair accessories.
So, if you have short hair, don’t think you have to miss out on this gorgeous hairstyle. With a little curl, creativity, and the right accessories, you can absolutely make a half-up, half-down style work for you.
10. Topsy Tail Tony Tails With Claw Clips

Credit: kaittnnicolee
For this hairstyle, start with a center part from your forehead all the way to the nape of your neck, giving you two equal sections. Again, it doesn’t have to be perfect; I know how stressful it can be when parting doesn’t look equal. We start panicking and crashing out, and that’s not the vibe we want for the first day of school,
Take one side and gather the hair into a low ponytail, securing it with a small elastic. Create a small opening in the hair just above the elastic, then flip the ponytail through the opening and pull it downward. This creates that pretty twisted effect.
Repeat the same process further down the ponytail to create multiple twisted sections. Once you are done, repeat everything on the other side, making sure both sides look relatively even.
Now comes the fun part: the accessories. Secure the ends of both ponytails with cute claw clips. Floral clips like the ones in the picture give the hairstyle a playful, feminine touch, but you can use butterfly, bow, or colorful clips depending on your style.
Finally, gently pull apart the twisted sections to give them a little more volume and softness. And there you have it: a cute hairstyle for school that has a whimsical touch to it.
11. Soft Piece-y Midi Bun

Credit: katiekbabehair
When I see hairstyles like this, I immediately think of prom, graduation, or other special ceremonial events. And since we are talking about cute hairstyles for the first day of school, I like to think of it as a little something ceremonial too, so yes, this hairstyle definitely fits the theme.
It has such a sweet, adorable, and elegant vibe. Even though I think it works especially well with dresses, it can also complement any back to school outfit you pair it with.
12. Slick Back Twisted Half Updo

Credit: alexisskenney
The soft twists at the back add a little detail to an otherwise simple half-up, half-down style, while the loose waves give it so much volume and movement, which I’m obsessed with.
The star of the show for me is how the waves fall so flawlessly. They make the hairstyle look full, soft, and feminine, while the twisted sections prevent it from looking too basic.
13. Messy Bun With Claw Clips

Credit: ventilustin
We all have those moments when we either wake up late or just feel too lazy to dress up. In those moments, spending thirty minutes to an hour, or even longer, on your hair simply won’t cut it. You want something quick, simple, and ready to hit the road.
And one of those cute lazy easy hairstyles for school is a messy bun with claw clips. Just pull your hair back, tie it into a bun with a hair tie, and add your favorite claw clips for a little extra flair. Simple, quick, easy, and, of course, you are not sacrificing style.
14. Half-up, Half-Down Hairstyle With Braid

Credit: hair_by_ellie7
Everyone is used to the regular half-up, half-down hairstyle, so why not switch things up by adding a giant braid to either one side or both sides of your head?
It is giving bohemian princess vibes, and it is the kind of hairdo that will definitely get you a few compliments on your first day back at school.
15. Sleek Ponytail

Credit: toucheddbyjae
There is just something about a high ponytail that immediately makes you look put together. I particularly love this version because it takes the regular sleek ponytail and gives it more volume and charm with those big, bouncy curls. The high placement and dramatic volume make it so much more glamorous.
Since I already taught y’all how to do the perfect slick back, you can achieve those bouncy curls by using clip-in extensions and use a curling iron to achieve that bouncy look.
16. Classic Slick Back Bun

Credit: znefer_
You don’t know what hairstyle to do? A slick-back bun.
You are running out of time? A slick-back bun.
You want to look classy? A slick-back bun.
A slick-back bun will always look clean, neat, elegant, and beautiful as long as you do it right. If you are looking for cute hairstyles for school that give you that prim-and-proper look, a slick-back bun is that girl.
17. Half-up, Half-down with Two Long Braids

Credit: _morganmaynor_
These days, there are so many variations of the half-up, half-down hairstyle that I can barely keep up, but I’m loving every single one of them.
And here is the thing: sometimes, it is the simple little details here and there that take the whole look from regular to sophisticated.
But if you are someone who is obsessed with the half-up, half-down style like I was, or still am, if I’m being honest, then you can always switch things up by adding little braids, twists, and accessories to spice things up.
18. Sleek High ponytail With Side Tendrils

I know some of y’all are going to be like, “Oh my God, there are so many ponytails.” Well, I don’t think there is such a thing as too many ponytails. We can never get enough, and that is the beauty of this hairstyle.
Previously, we had just slick backs and edges, but this time, we are going to take things a step further by adding side, face-framing tendrils. Oh, and let’s not forget the C-parting either. Oh, that is gold.
Girl, this is just to show you that your ponytails don’t always have to look the same. Add something extra and have fun with it.
19. Y2K Half-Up Half-Down

Credit: hairbyisaleace
Okay, this is giving Y2K baddie, and yes, honey, I live for every itty bit of it. The little half-up top bun, the face-framing pieces and those soft curled ends? Everything about this hairstyle screams early 2000s glam.
I love how the bun isn’t too perfect or overly slicked down. It has that slightly messy, effortless look that makes it look dazzling. And those little pieces falling around the face? YES PLEASE!!!!!
It is cute, flirty, nostalgic, and sassy, just how I like it.
20. Half-Braided, Half-Down Hairstyle

It gives edgy, creative, and effortlessly cool vibes. I really love how the detailed braiding adds personality to what would otherwise be a simple straight hairstyle. The laid edges also give it that extra chic touch.
You can also achieve this gorgeous look by braiding the front of your hair as seen here and adding a clip-in extension at the back.
22. Curly Pixie Cut

Credit: thedrapedexperience
Listen up, ladies, especially my Black sisters. If you did a big chop during the holidays, get yourself a curly pixie cut. Don’t think twice; just get it.
It is honestly one of the most beautiful back to school hairstyles for Black women. I don’t know how to explain it, but there is just something about a curly pixie cut that complements our facial features so well and makes them stand out even more.
Take a look at the image above. Do you see that beauty? That aura? That pizzazz? There are no words to describe that gorgeness.
23. Cropped Pixie Cut

Credit: emimckennahair
I understand this might not be everyone’s favorite, but trust me, this looks so good, especially if you have a round face. It is low-maintenance, easy to style, and still looks so refined.
24. Straight Hair With Layers

Credit: jessybelle.co
I love how simple it looks, but the soft layers and those slightly flipped ends add so much movement and volume to the hair. The middle part also keeps everything looking sleek and polished. It is giving bougie and expensive. You can also achieve this look with a wig. Personally, I prefer a wig because I can just slap it on and be out the door.
If you want something high-quality, and when I say high-quality, I’m not playing; these wigs are soft, lush, and voluminous. They are some of the best on the market, and you can shop this layered wig in this exact style from ISEE HAIR.
25. Tyla Braids

Credit: thekature.co
It’s giving, “If you say you love me, you’ll give me Chanel.” The Tyla braids are super cute and eye-catching, and I can totally imagine this hairstyle with denim jorts, a cropped tank top, and chunky shoes like Timberlands or sneakers.
26. Conrows With Falling Tendrils

Credit: feminineattractions
To my conrow lovers who are looking for their next hair inspo, I present to you this beautiful cornrow style with tendrils. It is so pretty and low-maintenance, especially during those rushed mornings. Definitely going on my next-to-do list.
27. Blonde Pony Tail With Dark Roots

Credit: taylor_circlesofhair
The last ponytail look, I promise.
What makes this hairdo really pop is actually the blonde color with dark roots, which makes it look so much more interesting than your average ponytail.
The big curls create so much volume and movement, and of course, we cannot forget those face-framing pieces that add such a delicate touch and make the whole look even more stunning and cute.
This is definitely one of those cute hairstyles for school that the girly girls will love.
28. Layered Cut With Curtain Bangs

Credit: ellizabeth.marie
She is such a fairy. Talk about ethereal; this hairstyle is the definition of it. Layered looks with bangs will always be a killer. This is the hairstyle for the It girls and baddies with class.
It is the kind of look for the pretty girl that everyone underestimates until she shows them exactly what she’s made of. There is something about this hairstyle that makes it a confidence booster.
I recently got a layered wig in this style from ISEE HAIR, and it is so beautiful, guys.
The quality is top-notch, and it came pre-styled and pre-bleached because, listen, I don’t like stress at all. I prefer when everything comes ready to wear because if it doesn’t, that wig is going to be sitting in my closet for months without getting worn.
