A good self care night time routine is one that prioritises taking care of yourself, preparing for the next day and most importantly unwinding before bed.

Having a self-care night alone can be a great way to unwind and recharge after a long day. But these ideas can be used to spend time with your boyfriend or a fun sleepover with your friends.

1. Set the Scene

Create a relaxing atmosphere by tidying up, dimming the lights, lighting candles, and playing some soothing music. This will help you to feel calm and peaceful.

You may also want to switch off all your electronic devices or at the very least switch them off 30 minutes before bed.

Sleep foundation recommends avoiding computers, smartphones, and other blue light-emitting devices in the hours leading up to bedtime.

2. Take a Bath

Taking a luxury self care bath can be a great way to relax and unwind before bed.

Add a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus oil to your bathwater and enjoy some much-needed relaxation.

3. Mindful Meditation

Meditation is a great way to clear your mind before bed. Quite often, when we are unable to quiet down our racing thoughts before bed, we often wake up feeling like we didn’t even sleep at all.

To really get that deep rest that keeps you in dreamland, find a quiet place, sit comfortably, and focus on your breath – 5, 10 or 15 minutes will do the trick.

You can use guided meditation apps to help you get started.

4. Write in a Journal

Writing in a journal can be a great way to brain dump and reflect on your thoughts and feelings.

Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you process your emotions, increase your self awareness and reduce stress.

Take some time to write down your thoughts and feelings, something exciting that happened today or write about things that you’re grateful for.

5. Skincare Routine

Skincare has to be one of my favourite parts of my self care night routine. But I have to be honest, it can sometimes feel like a drag sometimes. Establish a skincare routine that works for you and stick to it.

Maintaining a healthy and glowing skin is always worth it and is a major confidence booster so trust me this is a step you don’t want to skip!

You can make your skincare even more fun by dancing to some music while doing it or opting for more fun skincare product types, textures and colours. I have listed some of my favourites under self care night essentials below.

6. Read a Book

Reading a book is one of my favourite ways to stay present and mindful. Choose a book that you’ve been wanting to read and spend some time getting lost in the story.

There’s a reason why reading is a part of children’s nighttime routine – it has so many benefits for sleep quality.

According to headspace, cognitive exercises like reading strengthen the mind the way exercise strengthens the body. A strong cognitive function helps reduce mental chatter which helps to put you in a state of relaxation.

7. Drink Herbal Tea/ Water

Drinking tea is a great way to relax and unwind. Choose a tea that has calming properties, such as chamomile valerian root, or lavender.

Drinking herbal tea or water before bed has a number of benefits such as to detoxify the body and improve mood, but drinking too much fluids before bed can interrupt the sleep cycle.

It is important to try not to drink fluids within 2 hours before your bed time.

8. Stretch

Stretching is a great way to relieve tension in your muscles. Spend some time stretching your body, focusing on areas that feel tight or sore.

Stretching before bed can help you relax and reduce muscle tension.

Try these yoga poses to help you destress and unwind. Find a quiet space in your home and spend a few minutes stretching before you go to sleep.

9. Watch a Movie

Watching a movie is a great way to unwind and escape from reality for a little while. Choose a movie that you’ve been wanting to watch and enjoy some popcorn or other snacks.

Although you should note that watching scary movies or reading disturbing books right before bed, can impact our sleep, and cause anxious thoughts.

10. Take a Walk

Walking is a great way to clear the mind and get some fresh air. Spend some time outside, enjoying nature and getting some exercise.

You can also try some meditative or mindful exercises while taking a walk like this really cool 15 minute walking meditation.

11. Practice Gratitude

Practicing gratitude is a great way to focus on the positive things in your life and one of my favourite ways to end the day.

We can often focus on the things that aren’t going so well in our lives but what about the things that you dont always have to think about but are there for you anyways?

Take a few minutes to reflect on the things that you are grateful for, write them down or if you are feeling lazy you can simply think about them in your mind.

12. Try A Fun Game Or Activity

Playing games can be a fun and social activity. Engaging in a creative activity before bed can help you relax and reduce stress. Try knitting, coloring, or painting to help you unwind.

There are many options available to play games or an activity, with friends and family or solo.

Here are some fun ideas that can be great for a solo self-care night:

  1. Calm Cards – These are a set of cards with prompts for mindfulness, relaxation and self-care activities. You can pick a card and try the activity suggested on it.
  2. Affirmations Colouring Book – This classic game can be a great stress reliever and great for boosting your confidence.
  3. Self-Care Questions – This comes with empowering questions that help you self reflect on what’s really important to you. This can be a fun way to motivate yourself to take care of yourself.

Listening to music is a great way to set the mood for a self care night routine and unwind before bed.

Choose music that you enjoy and spend some time listening to it before bed. Try creating a playlist of your favorite relaxing songs and listen to it before you go to sleep.

14. Get Plenty of Sleep

I’m sure you are thinking “Well duh! Isn’t that the whole point of the self care night routine?”. You will be surprised that this really important point still gets overlooked.

Prioritising getting plenty of sleep is important for your overall mood and well-being.

Make sure to fit in enough time for a good night’s sleep after your self-care night routine.

15. Healthy Snacking

Eating a healthy snack before bed may be necessary to prevent low blood sugar. Certain snacks before bedtime can provide sleep benefits such as falling asleep faster.

Choose snacks that are high in protein and low in sugar and preferably not too close to your bedtime.

16. Digital Detox

Many of us have become obsessed with “doomscrolling,” it has become the norm to keep up with upsetting world events and updates from strangers online.

Doomscrolling is something that isn’t talked about enough but if you find yourself reaching for instagram first thing in the morning and find it hard to stop until the early hours of the AM, then it might be time for a social media detox.

Turn off your electronics and disconnect from technology at least an hour before bed. This can help you improve your sleep quality and leave you feeling fully rested when you wake up.

17. Listen To A Podcast Or An Audiobook

Listening to a bedtime story or a podcast can help you relax and prepare for sleep. Choose a story that you enjoy and listen to it before bed.

If you are more of a tangible person like me, reading a book would probably be more enjoyable for you.
